Readjusting to society after a person has served a jail sentence can take some time. It is important to be aware of the terms of parole, if applicable, and to understand what may happen if another crime is committed. Allegations of sex crimes can be especially damaging to a person’s reputation, even more so if there is a prior criminal history.
A 43-year-old Wisconsin man may be facing charges of second-degree sexual assault after an incident that occurred on March 22. According to reports, the man was inside a mall restroom when he allegedly groped a 21-year-old man. The 21-year-old claims that he was talking with the 43-year-old, and then they both went into the restroom around 12:30 p.m.
According to the police reports, the 43-year-old then allegedly touched the 21-year-old inappropriately inside the restroom after telling him he had just gotten out of jail. The 21-year-old was able to get out of the restroom and contact police. Authorities found the 43-year-old walking down the street. He reportedly told the officers that he was staying at homeless shelters.
According to police, the 43-year-old was a convicted sex offender. If the man does have a prior conviction for sex crimes, it may impact the charges and possible sentences he faces. It is not clear in this case if the man was still on parole, but committing a crime while on parole is a violation of the terms and can result in more jail time.
For those facing charges of sexual assault for the first time, it can seem overwhelming. A criminal defense attorney can help those accused make sense of the charges and understand all of their options moving forward.
